The U.S. Sanitary Commission Fair in Washington, D.C., closes with President Lincoln commending the organization for its fine work.
*The Math-A-Thon is here! Get your information packets from your math teachers. All proceeds benefit the St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Raise money, and get extra credit in math for participating. The math class that raises the most money will get an ice cream sundae party!
*Students just another reminder that picture day is today Thursday March 18th.
Pictures will be taken during your PE class. You do not have to purchase them, but we would like all students to have them taken.
*“Students, you’re invited to the Teen Issues Youth Conference on Saturday, March 27th at Woodland Community College. A representative will be here Friday and Monday at lunch in between the Admin Office and Cafeteria to register. The event is free, includes lunch and will raffle off $100 in prizes. See Mr. Canales or Ms. Lozano for more details.”
*Cooking Club this today, Thursday from 3-5 Pm in the teacher’s workroom. See you there.
*Next Honor Society meeting is Tuesday, March 23 directly after school in D-2. We will make final decision on fundraiser and sign up to work the sales table after spring break. Please let Mrs. Soga know if you are unable to make it but would like to work the sales table.

On this day in 1776, British forces are forced to evacuate Boston following General George Washington's successful placement of fortifications and cannons on Dorchester Heights, which overlooks the city from the south.

*Yesterday the boy’s soccer team defeated C A Jacobs 1-0 in a hard fought game. After a scoreless first half, Raul Barajas scored the only goal in the game off of a nice pass from Alexis Corona. Michael Alvarez-Romo and David Jimenez were strong in the middle, and the defense continues to dominate, allowing only 4 shots on net and helping to record the 5th shutout of the season for Douglass. The action continues today versus the Lee Wildcats here at Douglass. Today's game is a fundraising event - there will be drinks and snacks for sale, as well as a raffle and music. Admission is only $1 for students, free if you have an ASB sticker. All money raised will help the athletic program for next year. Come support your team and school.
*Just a reminder that there will no school this coming Friday, March 19, 2010, it is a Recess Day for the District.

The United States Military Academy--the first military school in the United States--is founded by Congress for the purpose of educating and training young men in the theory and practice of military science.

*Basketball Club will be cancelled today, and will resume on Thursday.
*Tomorrow the boy’s soccer team is at home hosting the Lee Wildcats. This is a fundraising event; there will be refreshments, snacks, and a raffle during the game. Admission to tomorrow's game is only $1 for students, free if you have an ASB sticker and $2 for adults. Come support the athletic program and the boy’s soccer team.

*Northern California Tournament of Champions Wrestling Championships.
Zack Lackey placed 6th out of 26 wrestlers at 76 pounds in Saturdays TOC tournament.
Wrestlers from the Oregon border to Bakersfield participated in the tournament held in Loomis.
Great job Zack.
*Last week on Thursday the boy’s soccer team beat Emerson Middle School by a score of 5-0. This is the 4th shutout this year due to a strong defense, which allowed no shots on net. Fernando Roa scored early in the game, followed by 3 goals for Marcos Martinez and another by Jose Aranda. Jose also had an assist, as did Alexis Corona, Isaiah Jimenez, and Luis Macias. Osvaldo Vera had another strong game, and David Jimenez continues to dominate the middle of the field. The boys remained undefeated, but will face 3 tough teams next week, starting with CA Jacobs at home on Tuesday.
*Douglass Girls Soccer match last Thursday with Emerson Douglass won 5 to 2 over Emerson with goals scored by the following:
Ashleigh Acevedo (1); Esther Bibriesca (1); Xochilt (1) and Roxana Ramos (2).
The whole team demonstrated very good offensive and defensive play.

*The boy’s soccer team beat Emerson Middle School yesterday by a score of 5-1. Sergio Fernandez scored once and had 2 assists in a strong performance. Luis Macias also had 2 goals, Jose Aranda had 1 goal and 1 assist, and Juan Garcia finished the scoring with a goal late in the game. Michael Alvarez-Romo and Enrique Gonzalez also had good offensive chances, contributing to 25 shots on net. Douglass remains undefeated and will play at home today at 4:00 pm versus Emerson.

* Yesterday the boy’s soccer team defeated Harper Middle School by a score of 2-0. Jose Aranda and Marco Mendoza scored the goals, assisted by Sergio Fernandez and Marcos Martinez. Luis Macias helped spark the offense in both halves of the game, taking shots on net as well as setting up other offensive opportunities. On defense, Juan Garcia and Eduardo Llamas had strong presence on the field, and held off the Harper attacks, allowing only 3 shots on net. This was Douglass' third straight shutout, tying a school record.
*Boy’s soccer team is to be excused at 2:15pm.

*Yesterday the boy’s soccer team defeated Emerson Middle School by a score of 3-0. Isaiah Jimenez scored twice and Fernando Roa put one in the net as well. Assists came from David Jimenez and Christian Castro. Despite the heavy rain, Douglass fought hard and the defense allowed only 5 shots on net - giving a shared shutout for goalies Esai Guevara and Danny Cervantes. There is no boy’s game today, but the girls are at home against Winters, so join us in supporting their efforts.

*Yesterday the boy’s soccer team tied Lee Middle School 0-0 in an action packed game, and remains undefeated against Lee in 5 years. There were plenty of opportunities to score, but good goaltending from both teams kept the game scoreless. Esai Guevarra blocked 12 shots to keep Lee from scoring, and David Jimenez and Christian Castro played well in their positions. The boys will play Lee again on the 17th at home.

On this day in 1781, the Articles of Confederation are finally ratified. The Articles were signed by Congress and sent to the individual states for ratification on November 15, 1777.
